The Day of Diagnosis: Autism Spectrum Disorder

26th February 2018 is a date we will never forget. It was the day our questions finally received an answer, the day we were told that Parth was on the Autism Spectrum.

Hearing those words for the first time felt like the ground shifting beneath our feet. As parents, we had suspected something was different, but no amount of preparation could soften the blow of the official diagnosis. A hundred thoughts raced through our minds: What does this mean for him? Will he ever speak fluently? Will he be able to go to school like other children? What does the future hold?

The doctor spoke gently, explaining that autism is not a disease but a developmental difference. Still, the word “spectrum” sounded vast and unfamiliar. We tried to listen, but our hearts were heavy. On the way home, silence filled the car. Both of us were lost in our own thoughts, holding back tears, trying to stay strong for Parth.

That evening, as we watched him play, something shifted inside us. Parth was still the same cheerful, innocent child we loved deeply. A diagnosis had not changed who he was. It only gave a name to the challenges we had already seen.

Yes, the future felt uncertain. Yes, we were scared. But in that moment, we made a quiet promise to ourselves: we would do everything possible to help Parth grow, learn, and shine in his own way. This was not the end of his story, it was the beginning of a new journey, one that would test us, but also teach us what true patience and unconditional love really mean.
